The men who tranfered the wounded Capt. Dole from Hill 913 to an Army aid station, had to carry him down the rugged, bombed-out Italian hillside on a stretcher like this one. A medic gave the young lieutenant morphine, and then marked Dole's forehead with an "M" in his own blood. After nine hours on the battlefield before being evacuated to an Army field hospital, Dole was not expected to live. Below is a picture of the hospital at Pistoia , where he was taken shortly after being wounded. The picture was taken during a recent visit of Senator Dole's, in November 2004. |
