"The Most Optimistic Man in America"

... was how Bob Dole described himself in his 1996 Presidential nomination acceptance speech. That optimism served him well in recovering from his war injuries.

"After the Second World War, my neighbors quietly took up a collection of $1,800 to help the medical expenses of a banged-up young vet who was looking for a miracle....."

---- Bob Dole

With his hometown rallying behind him and raising the money, he was able to go off to Chicago for consultations on specialist treatment.

Help was to come in the form of a reconstructive orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hampar Kelikian, a survivor in his youth of the Armenian genocide.
